Sep 24, 2021 ENDNOTE is available for Windows, and Mac desktops and laptops. Mac users: OS10.14 (Mojave) or later required to run Endnote X9. An iPad app is available from the AppStore for free. There is no app for Android devices. Two steps are necessary to be able to use EndNote with Word: 1: download the CWYW-plug-in, this step is explained below. 2: add some reference styles in EndNote Basic, this step is explained under the tab Reference styles. Sometimes, after installation, the EndNote-tab is missing from Word. You can find a solution to this problem here. If your mac's Documents folder is currently being synced over iCloud, use another location for your EndNote Library. Create an EndNote Library: Go to: Macintosh HD Users Your Name Documents Create a new folder and call it 'EndNote' Now go back to the EndNote application.
- To install EndNote X9, you must be an administrator on your computer. Please begin by closing all Microsoft programs, including Outlook and Word. After you click the link below, you will be asked to log in to inside.umassmed.edu; log in with your network username and password. You may need to precede your username with the school or clinical domain if you are off campus. For example - umassmedJonesJ or umassmemorialJonesJ
- For users upgrading from an older version of EndNote, please make sure your libraries are saved in a file location separate from the EndNote program folder (usually C:ProgramFilesEndNote). Uninstall older versions of EndNote.
- The EndNote install link you see below will download a zipped file into your downloads folder. You will have to unzip the file before you can run the installer; if you do not unzip the file, the installer will not be able to read the license information and will ask you for a license number or ask you to install a trial version.
- To unzip the file, go to your downloads folder and right click the zipped EndNote folder. Look for an option that says Extract all and click it. This step takes a few minutes; the extract may not respond right away but try to give it a little time to work. When you see a progress bar, you will know you're on your way.
- The unzipped folder will open automatically; double click on the icon named ENX9Inst. Follow the Installer prompts to install EndNote.
- Once the Installer is finished, you will find EndNote by clicking the Start/Windows button. You can pin it to your task bar by right clicking and selecting 'Pin to Taskbar.'
- The first time you open EndNote, you will encounter a gray screen. Create your library by clicking File>New and choosing a name and a local file location; do not store EndNote libraries in remote locations such as Dropbox.
EndNote is also available from the Software Center which may be available on your UMMS provided computer
The University has a site licence that allows staff and students to download, install and run EndNote on university or home computers at no cost.

Update EndNote
When you open EndNote you will be prompted to update to the latest version.
We recommend that you install the updates (if your computer meets the system requirements) as they include bug fixes, optimisations and other improvements.
If you are using Word 2016 for you should also install the latest update for Word.

EndNote is available widely across campus on computers in libraries and Student IT labs, including:
- Percy Baxter Collaborative Learning Centre, Baillieu Library Level 1, and
- ERC Level 1.
